Ben Godwin flying high into the finals after winning Boost Mobile SurfSho Open Trials

Today’s action saw 32 of Australia’s best aerial surfers competing in the open trials of the Boost Mobile SurfSho for two wildcard spots in tomorrow’s final. Central Coast Surfer Ben Godwin impressed the judges with his high-flying maneuvers, scoring an amazing 8.67 (out of a possible 10) for a front-side air-reverse, which led him to victory in the final.
Ben Godwin, Beau Foster and the wildcard from yesterday’s junior event Gabriel Medina will now face some of the worlds best surfers, including Jordy Smith, Taj Burrow andOwen Wright - the winner of the last two Boost Mobile SurfShos - in tomorrow’s final – all chasing $25,000 first prize.
Event spokesperson John Shimooka said, “Boost Mobile SurfSho is known for unearthing new surfing talent. Last year CooperChapman wowed the crowd in the trials and built the foundation for a successful surfing career, attracting respect from the surfing community.”
Today Beau Foster has followed in Chapman’s footsteps, impressing the judges and the thousands of spectators on the beach with his new school bag of tricks and stylish aerial antics.”
The Boost Mobile SurfSho continues tomorrow kicking off at 8am with the Wheel Rounds - a unique format in which a wheel is spun at the start of each heat, determining which tricks the surfers must perform. B, O, O, S, T letters are awarded to each successful maneuver and the six highest scored surfers who spell ‘BOOST’ go into the final.
Shimooka continued, “Tomorrow will be a ripper day with the world’s best surfers competing. The Boost Mobile SurfSho is designed to be a competition that everyone on the beach can enjoy, regardless of their surfing knowledge. We chose the wheel format so that spectators know what the surfers are supposed to be doing out there and can judge along with the panel whether they’ve achieved the trick."
Tomorrow's action will also include a jet-ski tow in expression session assisting the surfers get the biggest air possible and a free live concert from 3.30pm featuring Georgia Fair and Kingtide.
