Sea chantey: a work song that rhythmically matched to the activity speed of the workers on the old ships
Pirate ballad: a song telling a tale of pirates.
Sea song: a song about a life at sea from a narrative or personal point of view
Sydney Festival today announced that former frontman for Midnight Oil and current Federal Minister for
the Environment, Heritage and the Arts Peter Garrett has been added to the line-up for Rogue’s
Gallery, an epic concert tribute to songs of the sea, set to take place on the Forecourt of Sydney Opera
House on Thursday January 28, 2010.
Garrett will join the already star-studded cast that includes: quintessential rock survivor, connoisseur of
songs and charismatic interpreter, Marianne Faithfull; Hollywood superstar and musician Tim Robbins;
Canadian shock-rocker Peaches; producer and legendary purveyor of deft pop gems Todd Rundgren;
member of the seminal American proto-punk band The New York Dolls David Johansen; Irish singer,
songwriter and member of the post-punk group The Virgin Prunes Gavin Friday; American roots
revivalist, vaudevillian and raconteur Baby Gramps; founding member of protopunkers Rocket From The
Tombs David Thomas; English folk-royalty, original member of The Watersons and Waterson:Carthy,
Norma Waterson; Irish chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan; daughter of British folk duo Richard and Linda
Thompson, Kami Thompson; and Marry Waterson of the folk-music family, The Watersons; rising Indie
Star Liam Finn; as well as fellow Australians ARIA Award winning songstress Sarah Blasko; Little Birdy
front woman Katy Steele and one of the finest songwriters of his generation; and front man for rock band
Augie March, Glenn Richards.
This one-off event will soak up the sea-salt atmosphere of the surrounds, as this veritable rabble of
singers and musicians perform songs that were sung by sailors and convicts alike when they first landed
at Sydney Cove 200 years ago.
Based on the 2008 album release of the same name and produced by impresario extraordinaire Hal
Willner (Came So Far for Beauty, Sydney Festival 2005), Rogue’s Gallery is a sprawling and spirited
voyage into the hardships and horrors, the drinking and death, and the lusts and loneliness of life on the
seas.
The project was conceived by film director Gore Verbinski and actor Johnny Depp when they were filming
Pirates of the Caribbean II. Fascinated by pirate culture and songs of the time, they came up with the
idea of getting a bunch of artists to record renditions of pirate tales and the earliest form of punk music –
sea chanteys. Producer Hal Willner came on board and pulled together an amazing array of artists for
recording sessions in various cities.
